Max was Penfold’s visionary who travelled around the world to research cherry wine. He ended up in France and there he got a unique idea on how to make great Australian red. After years of research and splendid ideas, he still got a cruel rejection by the home office. Although this had taken its toll on him, he still did his best and continued working secretly for many years to come. However, since luck follows the hopeful, in 1960, a rumour of a mysterious new Australian wine fermented the world, the discovery finally won a lot of rewards and got the recognition from the government as the best Barossa Valley wine.

Even though decades have passed since Hugh Johnson labelled Grange as the best grown of the southern hemisphere, Penfolds still managed to produce better versions and even create new and exciting red wines. Penfolds introduced the Marananga Shiraz back in 2011 as their newest addition, originating from the Barossa sub-district, Marananga. The Marananga Shiraz has deep inky colour, achieved by adding chocolate and coffee to the mixture, but it still offers a soft and detailed finish. The well-balanced style with pure blackberry cider and fine tannins is what amounts to its long-lasting and strong flavour.

When Penfolds mixed Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro everyone was a little sceptic, even though they are one of the best vines in Australia. The end result produced the perfection in the form of wine. Coming from old, traditional Barossa Valley origin, it is fruit-based with a lot of rhubarb, red berried peppers and licorice. Penfolds Bin 138 Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre has a dark mixture of black, red and purple colour with rich dark chocolate aroma mixed with mocha and caramelised oak. Backed by years of experience, Penfolds created one of the best Grenache mixes that comes with a dense, yet fresh fruit-based mix that has utterly rich aroma – quite a celebration for the palate. This wine brings a unique mixture of plum and raspberry with just a hint of spice and strong tannin.
